changes in rpm's when running dont necessarily lead to a mechanical fault it could just be carb tuning but it could lead you to leaky seals or a bad carb. A well tuned and maintained 2 stroke should run perfectly happily at any angle or orientation as long as there is sufficient fuel in the tank. Another thing to check is the fuel in the tank. does it smell stale, is there oil in it, does it look like there is too much oil in it. These things will give you some indication as to the competency of the owner as to the care of their equipment.
