Help with friends 3300 Poulan.

My friend has a Poulan 3300 that locked up on him at in the middle of a cut at full throttle.
After it sat for for awhile, he manage to get it unlock, but it wouldn't run right after that.
A few days later he go it to run and it ran good for about an hour and then locked up an him again. He's using Poulan full synthetic oil at 40 to 1 (what Poulan says to use on this saw)
Does any body have any ideas whats going on here?
I'm thinking the saw is toast, but he really like the saw and doesn't want to hear that kind of talk.

Pull the muffler

Pull the muffler and check out the cyl. If it is scored badly, like it or not it is probably toast, fried, DOA.

If it is toasted and you decide to rebuild it, now would be a good time to upgrade it to a Poulan Pro chrome plated cyl and piston.

3300 is a nice saw, and I think maybe a 335 or 330 P/C would work.
