how big of a bar?

How long of a bar can you put on a MS440 safely? I want to use a full comp chain and am thinking of the 30" range.

Full comp up to 28" bar should not be a problem.

If you bury a 32" bar in hardwood the saw is going to be working some long hard cuts. 36" is way too long

I'd go anywhere between 20-24. Got a 20 on mine and it screams.

32" 7t sprocket skip chain is the max and 28" would be a lot more useful again 7t and skip. If you want to run a 32" and up you need more horsepower. The 440/044 can only do so much.

I got a 034 with a 25" and need something with a little more depth. I think I will go with the 28"
