Once in a while some older saws I run change Idle speed when I set them on the ground, On occasion one cuts off. Other than that they run fine. Is this caused by some sort of seal or vacume leak or is it just because it is pulling less air from the bottom when on the ground?

yup could be an air leak on the case but it could be as simple as your carb being to rich on the low needle causing fuel to build up in the crank case when at idle. when you let it idle for a minute then rev er up does it smoke lots on the first initial bwaahhhhhhhh?
edit:
try letting it idle for a good minute or two then roll the saw over for a bit and see if that kills it. if it does then yeah its a rich carb setting. if it doesn't change at all then you have other problems that i am not qualified enough to troubleshoot. wait for one of the hardcores to reply they can usually diagnose any problem you can toss at em.
