I would like to know if I can replace the crankcase from my 2100cd with one from a 298.
I believe they share the same crankshaft.

Yes
285CD, 2100CD, 2101XP and 298XP all have the same crank and case. That I'm sure of.

I believe its the same crank used in the 288 also.

not same crank as 288.

181 (1983 and newer), 281, 288, 394 share same crank (can be used). 1982 181SE had smaller crank journal and bearing on flywheel side.

So the cases are the same but the cranks are different?

The flywheel side crankcase is different as well. The OD of the 1982 flywheel bearing is smaller than OD of pto side. The bearing in 1982 crankcase flywheel side is same as used in a 61, 66, 266, 77, 480, 50, 51, 55, 372, 359, 365, 357, etc.

I guess they went to larger bearing in 1983 due to broken cranks? Or ???

I thought I would also add this:

Crank seal on the flywheel side of 181SE
1982 = 503260204
1983 and newer = 503260205

Crank Bearing on flywheel side of 181SE
1982 = 738220225
1983 and newer = 738220325

Crankcase (complete)
1982 = 501800360
1983 and newer = 501800361
