Is the MS460 Magnum Weak?

I have an old 046.

I've built a couple of 460s from spare parts and use them on 3' diameter black oak , 32" bar, no problems. My old 440 will keep up with it but the 460 has proven itself to be plenty capable for my needs. Of course they won't keep up with my old 064, but they ain't as heavy either, and like Wolf said, use the lightest saw that will get the job done! I'm no pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what works. For milling, the 460s with a semi skip tooth do a fine job, and have produced some really nice slabs for me recently.

I have one of each, 046 and MS460 and they are comfortable with a 25 inch bar in all wood we cut around here, a longer bar is ok at times but it can limit the RPM range the saw likes to be in, sort of drags the RPM down and I prefer a saw that can always reach top RPM when felling to blast through that last little bit just when needed.

I am not sure there is a Stihl model made up to the '1" series (461,661 etc) that I have not had or currently own. I love the 044/440 and 046/460. They run a 20" nicely. As for a 24" that is better suited to my 064, 066, and 660's. Right now my go to is a 395 ported by Randy with a 24".

My MS 460 will pull a 32" bar through black oak and a chainsaw mill all day no problem. The 064 is strictly for falling and bucking anything over 32". My longest bar is 36" and i won't run it on the 460. YMMV

Glad it works for you! I have pulled 12,000lbs of grain with a 1/2 ton truck with a 300 6cyl before but the 1 ton with a V-10 works better.

A 24 would be ideal.

I don't know, but I suspect the 460 oiler will be pushed to oil a 36" bar. I know my ported 372's do oil and pull a 36" bar in any wood we have in the PNW very well. My early 046 is quite strong and runs a lightweight 28" as it's regular bar great. I doubt I'd run over 32" on a regular basis.

A 24 would be ideal.

I have a 460 and can bury a 24 in oak. Handles it very well. I prefer a 28 tho, it just balances better and being a taller guy keeps me upright just a little more.

I am amazed at how some folks cannot match a bar to a saw. They toss a big bar on a small saw and run it like they stole then wonder why they burned it up. Some guys cut softwoods and think hardwoods are the same.

STIHL from the factory matches them pretty damn good every time.

I run a 20" on 70cc and 20-24" on 90cc. If need be larger on the 90cc. If I just want to play then I break out the 120cc stuff

I plan on getting a 460. That saw would cover all my needs with one saw. I am yet to hear anything bad about that saw.
