So I go in a stihl dealer to grab some pull rope for a Honda Motor.

I couldn't resist asking if there were any 044-460 saws kicking around. This dealer ive bought about 12 project saws from in the passed.

Guy says he'll go look, comes back with a saw that makes my eyes light up.

How much do you want for that?62 bucks, I say ill take it.

Very clean complete saw. Ive never seen a muffler like this or a bar oiler pumper Button

How old is it?

Its only making 60psi.
Im going to keep this one it rounds out a 3 saw plan.

Will get it going port and find a big bar

That isnt stihls work?
Theres no screen on the side like normal

I think its in to good a shape for logger saw. Maybe a milling saw

Cleaned it up. Looks like Impulse line failed20211030_002247.jpg
Cylinder looks to be salvage able

Will work on it with muratic acid before getting carried away

Probably order piston, seals, fuel line source a Impulse local. Maybe bearings. Maybe bigbore and have la sleeve fix it.

Maybe I dont need to keep it. Someone might want to trade a 462

Not ready for this project. Been working on a ford 300 port and chevy 1.94 1.60 valves20211029_212811.jpg

20211030_095047.jpgthis thing is in remarkable shape. Time killed it not use.

This old old school high quality bearings. Ive spent some time feeling the crank . I honestly dont think cheap bearings from today will improve it.

I like doing muffler mods , this muffler intrigues me, did some research and it is factory for early 084s.
I dont think it will move enough air but stock it might be fine. Id like to go to HD air Filter but came up dry on ebay.

Never seen a picture here. Something to do with brake adjustment.

This saw got me interested in fireing up my 372 xpw and man that is an absolute animal of a saw. Loppy iddle Instant throttle response and Butter smooth.

Yeah I could let the 84 go for another 70cc . On the flippt sidecaxquick search and I found very few of these forcsale.

That muffler looks the same as my 084, except my cover was corroded out at the screw holes. OEM is made of unobtanium, so I replaced it with a milled aluminium one from eBay. The button is not an oil pump, more of an override. There's a screw on the underside of the saw to set (restrict) the oil flow rate, pressing in on the button overrides that setting and allows max oil flow to the bar.

OEM cylinder is also made of unobtanium. After some research, I installed a Cross Performance cylinder kit (along with new OEM crank seals). It's Nikasil coated and came with Caber rings and was described by someone with more knowledge as "mildly ported". All I can say is the ports are visibly different than OEM and it runs well with good power. (Full disclosure: this is the second kit. First kit was scored on the first tank of fuel, but I traced the damage to a piece of metal that broke off the Schrader valve of my compression tester when checking after the rebuild, so not a fault of the kit).

It's the big boy of the set. It's heavy, loud and powerful enough to handle a 3' bar with ease. Aside from cutting large diameters, I also have a carbide chain for trimming off stumps close to the ground and ripping chains with an Alaskan mill. But for routine use in smaller wood, a smaller saw is easier on the arms.

I love 084’s. Reliable solid Stihl. These three are my big ones that come out on most days, 25” 36” 48”266ADC23-638F-40E7-BE72-497ADEF83821.jpeg

Nice Karl

Torch.
Ive been looking at the oil pump thing ans noticing it seems to have a normal stihl oil set up.

I run 32"-36 on my 70cc but normally 25

This saw if I keep it would be for the ounce every 3 years 48" plus tree. Othere then a big tree removal I have no Design to cut with it.

Do they all have it 84-880, I had 084 15 years ago I dont remember the oiler.
back then I let that saw go for a 372.
I quit CAD and for the most part cutting for a few years exept for a tree or two year.
kept my 026 for 8 years or so alone. Shes beat now but still runs with the new stuff.
Then I CAD bought a xpw cause it was cheap and newer not even a project saw.
Offcourse I turned it into a project Tore it down ran some burrs around in it.
Ive ported all my 70cc saws and this one by far makes me grin the most.

Now learning about these heavy pigs again. Ive never done a piped saw so maybe just for Kicks.

Thanks for the replies Info and conversation

I've also seen it described as an "oil boost button". Searching Google for either term suggests does not reveal any other models that had one. But I don't know if every 084 had this feature. I know there were other things (eg muffler, air filter) that evolved over time, so maybe the "Quick action adjuster" or "Oil boost button" was dropped at some point in time.

This thread suggests it boosts the oil flow beyond the "Max" adjustment setting when pushed, similar to the more permanent push pin on the bottom of some other big Stihl pro saws:

Yeah, I've got a bad dose of 084 CAD, this baby hooked me, now I have 2 in bits and thousands of Aussie dollars in parts awaiting the moment of inspiration to get started. Sigh... love is a strange thing
