Well, I'm on zipper's side on this one. If I see a snake I kill it, period.
How long does it take to see if a snake is poisonous or not? I don't know, I've never taken that much time. It's kinda like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop.
I've stepped on too many water mocasin's to care to take the time to identify one, untill after it's dead.

The Tootsi Pop thing caused me to spit out a mouth full of Diet Dew. That is funny. As far as snakes go kill them all. We have mouse traps after all.

I have to say it " don't kill black snakes". They are good pest control, the reason it was there was probably to eat mice/rats living in the wood. I always wondered why a full grown person would be scared of a little snake?

Keep wondering because this 6'4 270 pounder will run like a school girl when he see's a snake. I would much rather move a piece of wood and see a mouse than a snake. No snake makes it alive if I have anything to do with it.

I am not scared of snakes.. I just hate em.. Yes a good snake is a dead snake.
I was doing some dozer work Monday out by my new pond.. saw a 3 foot water snake in the pond. He just kept going in and out.. Til the 20 gauge buckshot entered the picture..Now he is dead tossed over the dam. When I pulled him out with the frog gig.. I could have sworn he had his belly full of my fish... That I just spent 257.00 US dollars to introduce into the pond..
If his friends or relatives come for a swim they too will meet Mr Buckshot.

I dont have any problems with them snakes. Around here i think the only things we got is Gardner snakes and they are pretty tame.. pick em right up and pet em. Down around Desmoines when i was groing up there was a ole party place called Banner pits. Nests and nests of Moccasins on tha banks. Used to a be a old mine. You could be sittin in the water soakin down some beers and a water moccasin would swim between your arm and chest and keep going. Just dont pick them up and they would leave ya alone. Friend of mine had picked 1 up and was all peacefull wrapped around his wrist and arm till someone started waving his arms being a moron, snake came around and tapped him a couple times on the hand. The hand got swollen alot and he was in pain .. but was able to use the other hand to drink more beer. Funny thing i remember about the ole friend that got tapped is 2-3 weeks coming back from a 3 dog night concert at the casino he decided to give a construction sign a "high 5" doing 60mph down the road. Sounded like a rifle going off in the car.. he bent over for awhile and we got back i didnt see him for a couple months.. dont know the injury of that 1

I have the luxury of being indifferent to snakes. The rattlers have long since been killed off by the settlers and water moccasins are pretty scarce. Mostly just the benign garder snakes are what I find.

But I'm a sucker for a turtle. It's a rare day that I won't help one across the road. Makes me sad seeing them as road kill.

Except for the snapping ones. I've seen some snappers as big as a small alligator fully stretched out.

I'm not scared of snakes but i will kill water moccasins, Copperheads and rattlers when seen. All non poisenous snakes i will leave alone. Now a bee is another story, Scared to death of them.lol Also agree with woodbooga on the turtles. hate to see them run over also will help the big snappers too. They are on the endangered list here.

My dad and I were moving some wood in the wood pile last year and came across a snake skin...That was it for dad, gone, no more help that day...I called him Sally and he told me to wake up w/ a bamboo viper sleeping on your chest and see what you think of snakes...

We have a five foot King snake that my daughters boyfriend kind of left us with, I'm glad this thread came up cos with only feeding it a couple of mice once a week its easy to forget about it.

This thread reminded me to defrost the two mice.

Have got to say though, they aren't the most interesting pets to have about, they just lie about doing nothing most of the time and the only interesting thing they do is eat.

Once you have watched them eat a couple of times even thats pretty boring.
The cat and dog are far more entertaining to me.

Whole lotta years ago on a Friday night I was in town with a buddy of mine parked at the local hangout waiting for other friends to show up. Car load of babes pulls in and wanted to know what was going on tonight.He had Larry (a 7' black Indigo) around his neck and when he got out to talk to the girls he plopped him on my lap and said keep an eye on Larry. I was fine with him on the other side of the car but i'm not real comfortable now.He slid down on the floorboard and that was just fine with me.
That is untill he started slithering up my pant leg. Being as it was a warm summer night I just slipped on a pair of bibs, no unders, shoes, socks or shirt. Well he just kept going further up that pant leg all the while I was waiting for him to reverse direction without me having to actually touch him. He got to about mid thigh and I figured about another foot and he is going to run into something fuzzy that just might remind him of those baby chicks that he was all ways fed.:censored: That was all it took for me to muster up the courage to grab holt of him and chuck him in the back seat.Course my buddy thought it was :censored:hilarious.
I don't care much for snakes either!

We usually see a few garter snakes around our woodpiles, they can't eat anything big but it is still nice to see them around.

Back in the day when I was in HS I worked with a science teacher that did research on timber and massasauga rattlesnakes. We would actually go out looking for them, catch and study them and than release them. In all that time I was never bit or threatened by one. It was fun to be running around in the hills after poisonous snakes.

Their easy to catch and release. At one time we had one living in our little red barn. Never seen any mice!

Here is one I caught last summer. The dogs were about to give it a good chewing beofre I came to the rescue.

Black snakes are great for rodent control. Ain't too many places a rodent can go that the snake can't go.


Black snakes also keep away copperheads and rattlers. Black snakes are very territorial and will bully those other species away from the area.

We use to catch those black snakes when I was a kid. Caught a few about 6ft long and as big around as my arm (back then)

We use to walk around the neighborhood with them wrapped around our neck and shoulders. Some of them tame down quickly once they realize you won't hurt them. Use to freak out all the neighbors!

Others wouldn't tame down at all. Their bite doesn't hurt much at all. Actually feels like when you get some blackberry thorns stuck in you. I use to take up a collection of money to let everyone watch one bite me. It was easy money. The blood made the bite look worse than it was.


Black snakes are good to have around and don't hurt a thing.

If there are any questions, i'll be glad to get my wife to post here about her experiences last year after getting nailed twice by a copperhead, do a search...she was off her feet for two months....never saw a black snake last year...hmm.
