We're taking down a 6' DBH Willow Oak & I was thinking of making a table or two using some cookies we cut from the trunk. Is this doable or will they split/crack to pieces? If doable, what do I need to do to ensure there's minimal splitting, etc? Any tips/pointers appreciated, thanks!

If you set out thin oak rounds to dry, they will develop big splits, more so, it seems, than other types of wood. Perhaps you can fill them with some kind of resin-based material, and take the cross sections from the root flair or a large branch union.

A friend of mine said to paint them or better yet, to use Anchorseal 2. Was thinking I'll need to cut them 8-12" thick & stand them upright to dry in our shop for a couple years??? Anyone else got any suggestions?
