Had to light the first fire in the woodstove today! Feels good after after all the cutting, splitting and stacking over the last 2 years. The temp at our little bungalow on the mountain this morning was 28 degrees! Might make 45 by late afternoon! Winters coming quick!

I had 22f a few mornings ago. Sometimes I feel like Alaska is warmer than the Central Oregon high desert.

Hit 36 here early morning.. La Nina becoming West Based.... 3 areas will get pounded with snow and see FRIDGID temps! NorthWest and Nothern Plains and New England...Pretty much top half of the country...Alaska may feel it big time this year with cold.

Better stack, cover, insulate and be ready. :)

Since I moved up here in '06 it has been warmer here than much of the lower 48 numerous times in the winter. The only downside is that winter tends to last so much longer up here than much of the lower 48.

I sure like the sounds of getting pounded with snow, but I could do without the extreme cold temps! Trips to the cabin are so much more enjoyable with lots of snow to play in!

That has been my baby for the past 4 years. I bought it in pretty rough shape and have been slowly rebuilding her. Its a 2 hour drive from my home to the trailhead and then a 8 1/2 mile atv or snowmachine ride in to get there. Cant get a truck back there. She sits on 5 acres and borders a very productive salmon stream. And where there are lots of salmon there are even more black and grizzly bears! And we are 1/4 mile upstream of the Talkeetna river and 3/4's of a mile downstream of a very large, deep lake with burbot, lake trout, rainbows and whitefish!

This was our first weekend in the cabin after we bought it. It has a 8' porch that wraps around 3 sides of it but the roof on the long side collapsed under a snow load several years before we bought it. You can tell by the pictures that the previous owner hadnt been in there in quite a while. It was a shame such a nice place was going to rot!

Our first winter in it we didnt get to do much to the outside but worked on the inside.

Rebuilding the porch roof and getting rid of those cedar shingles was the first order of business. My parents came up for a visit from Indiana and helped with the task. Took 6 days start to finish!

That was the best thing we ever did. The old roof was starting to leak and we caught it just in time! Now I wont have to worry about it as long as I am on the planet!

I can't imagine the work that went into just hauling the supplies in. You deserve to enjoy it.

I must have broken a lot of mirrors as a kid. Why oh why am I not the one posting stuff like this.

Enjoy...the snow pics are priceless.

looks like you've put some hard work into that place. I hope you and your fam enjoy it for many many years! cheers:)

Thanks guys! It has definitely been a labor of love. Hauling in the materials and gear is half the fun. This was one trip with the tin for the roof. It was 20 12' long sheets and then we had another 18 10'ers on the meat trailer. Total was around 1800#'s and it took almost 3 hours to go 8 miles! The wood we mostly hauled in the winter in large sleds behind the snowmachines! Definitely a slice of heaven back there though!

I took my first grizzly bear with a bow back there this year as well!

Exploring the back country from the cabin is always an adventure! This was in the spring up looking for grizzly bear dens!

Very nice place. Looks like your outhouse also needs a new roof. I find the pisspot for the children a little rudimentary.

I did get a chance last fall to complete the outhouse roof as well. The previous owner liked to spend all his time at the cabin partying rather than doing any work to the place.

And here is the latest picture I have of the cabin after we pressure washed it(That was a long tough process with no water and no electricity!:D) and then stained it. I have replaced several of the timbers holding the roof up with burled logs, but don't have any pics of it since then!

Very nice. That is a really cool place you have.

How hard was the metal roof to do? Had you done one before? Been thinking about doing one myself so I am curious to hear some experiences...

That was the first time I had ever attempted anything like that but would not hesitate to do it again. There was nothing really difficult about it. Even trimming it and sealing it around the stove pipe was pretty straight forward. I am thinking about putting a metal roof on our house as well.

Cory, welcome to AS, and thanks for sharing those awesome pics man!!!!

Cabin looks great, your hard work paid off.
