i have a mature sugar maple that now at the end of august is dropping leaves. unusual as this tree doesnt do so until they turn in about a month. the leaves are still green when they are on the tree but suddenly, overnight, im noticing lots on the ground . some do have a few splashes of color but they are not noticible on the tree. this happened a few yrs. ago and the arborist says it was a fungus going around not to worry, more cosmetic that anthing else. it has a long "stripe of bark missing, vertically. it appears to be healing. the arborist said it was an old wound, maybe a lightning strike. this maple grew up a few ft from a garage on one side and ingropund pool on the other. the roots are showing above ground. arborist said to cover with a little mulch, let the leaves stay where they fall. i thought the wise thing to do is remove any leaves that might contain a fungus. is there something going around the northern part of massachusetts this year again? id like to help this tree. thanks.
