I know nothing about these. My dad wants to get one to check logs. Any suggestions on brand? Try not to get to high end(he's kinda cheap).

Got the cheap one from wally world. It does good I have misplaced it and cant remember the name.

I got one from Wally World about 4 or 5 years ago, it's a Bounty Hunter. I think the model is 202. It was a couple of hundred buck's but it works pretty good on log's.
Bounty Hunter has cheaper, and more expensive models. I went mid range because we like to go out and play with it once in a while.

I use an old [like 20 years] Whites Coinmaster. It's saved me loads of damaged blades. Not 100% for sure, but better than what I used to use. A sharp blade.

That is what I have, a White Coinmaster 6000. From a yard sale in 1986 or 7. It is big and clunky but will find a nail buried in a tree over two inches deep.
