MS180 vs MS210

I just noticed that the MS180 and MS210 are both rated at 2.0 BHP. The MS180 is 31.9cc while the MS210 is 35.2cc. Is the MS210 any stronger in the cut? Would it better pull the .050 chain? I noticed the .050 pulls my MS180 down a little so I stick with .043 on it, even modded.

The 210 is the better saw, in my view, for several reasons. It has a larger engine (35cc), and even with that it is on the small side. It has interchangable parts with the entire 1123 line (025,023,021,250,230,210). It also has the real saw bar mounts if you get the non-C model. However, I called mine the wood massager when I had it. Not that great on power. I use picco low profile 3/8 on my 1123 saws, even on the 250 size. For me the picco pulls better than the .325 fat kerf.

The 180 is a good little saw, but the top is pretty flimsy. It also only comes in the C model now, and not with the regular type bar nuts. The 0.043 is a nice and narrow kerf, and the real secret to that saw's performance. I do not like the C model type auto-adjust plastic bar tensioners. They are weird and they can break. I prefer bar nuts. And beer nuts, for that matter

I do not know why they have same HP from that much of a difference in displacement. The 180 must rev higher, or have more torque. Gott'a be one or the other.

Actually, what's driving this post is that my Dad doesn't like the tiny .043 chain in his 180. Yes, it'll pull .050, but I'm just wondering if the 210 would be any better or not.

Yea the MS210 has more low end torque. However I think the MS180 is a better "small" saw.

I really didn't notice any significant power difference between the two but the MS180 just fealt more nimble.

My MS210 didn't weigh that much less then a MS260 so I gave it the "boot" and kept the MS180.

Brad I think you already know the answer. But I have an 021 since new.I bought 017 on ebay with no b/c so I put 16" 3/8 picco on and used it. It cut Ok but you can tell its underpowered. When I have the money I bought 14" .043 bar and cant believe the difference in the two. The saw feels better balanced now,not weight but powerwise.

I think the whole Stihl lineup has its place. If Stihl keeps them in the lineup for so long they must be selling. Im not knocking what you say but Im a homeowner and dont really need a 260. At work we have a 038,044 and 390 I would never have a 021 there,we would trash it.

It seems to me that Stihl has more saws in their lineup than necessary. IMO, they could start with the 180 then skip to the 250, then I guess jump to the 310 and finish off with the 390.

Just a thought.

Yeah, but he has a 210 that he got for not much, so he might as well make the most of it.

My small Echo 3450/345/346 have 3/8 .050 and do OK. They are only 33.6cc, and the smaller 305/306 are 30cc and use the 3/8 ,043. Your 210 should do better than the 33.6cc Echos. They do fine for limbing, trimming, and small wood.

Not really. Neither the 210 or 280 is a saw I want to keep. They will both be going to finance the saws I do NEED I'll stick with my 180. We can find a different saw for Dad should he stick to his guns about this.

Yah, I am thinking the same with my 025 and 250. Replace them with an older fully adjustible 026 or a 260 PRO. I left the 210 with the ex when I moved out.

Using that logic, I talked myself into two 361s. For about the same weight as a 250, may as well have a 260. Of course, for not so much more money as a 260, may as well gat a 361. So I got a deal on second 361. But really, I do not like the 1123 line of saws. They are a PITA to work on, compared to the pro saws that Stihl has. So I still want a 260. Actually, I want a 261, but they do not exist. 361 type engine in a smaller 260 frame that weighs 10 pounds and drives a 16 inch 3/8 B&C. :greenchainsaw:

Well, they could certainly drop the 170, and the 230, and probably the 310. They will not drop the 290; that is their best selling saw! And having 3 in each lineup is easy and cheaper to produce. Same frame, just a different engine (and on some a different carb) for each size.

In 2010 it will all be moot though. All these saws are going away. Everything they sell now, except the 441 with the strato, will no longer be sold in the states. The stricter EPA rules will go into effect then.

Yah, I looked at the 192. Spendy, and underpowered in my view. I wanted a Dolmar 420, but they are no Dolmar dealers listed on their web site that actually have saws around here.

Not as underpowered as you might think. I like all three of mine. Not a 200 though.

The purpose of all the different saws has to do with all of the different areas that are sold to. Dealers don't have to stock them all. Each one serves a need.

A couple days ago, I started a thread asking why the 210 is such a dog. It's short on power (for its displacement), a tad heavy, and kinda pricey.

Looks like the 210 is going away, to be replaced by the 211... stratified-charge, four-port design.

What's weird is the new 211 seems to be built on the same platform as the 171 and 181:

So the new 211 should be pretty decent in power-to-weight (+0.3 hp, -0.2 pounds) - probably a better "little" saw than the 210.
