MS460 Air Baffle

Under the air filter on my MS460 there is a baffle that that air has to travel around before it enters the carburetor intake. It seems unnecessary. Is this another EPA addition od does it really help smooth out the airflow into the carb?

some one correct me if im wrong but i think its to prevent fuel spitback onto the air filter

That is correct, there is a black "spitback" baffle underneith the air filter. The older ones did not have this, they have a large foam filter which fills it the whole filter area.

i pull the foam out of the filter and dont mind alittle spitback
