My stovepipe is causing ice dams!

Rock Wool is what you need to insulate with.

My pipe melts the frost off at time, but I think it's more the sun reflecting off it than the heat from it.

I's strongly encourage you to check the soffits. Regardless of the ice dams, clogged soffits will lead to mold buildup and wood rot.

A cold beer in the attic sure makes the job go faster, or seem faster :)
I'll just bring a case of beer along with a dust mask and the shop vac. Looking from outside there appears to be plenty of vents in the soffit, should I be able to see daylight from inside the attic when looking at them?

Desmond,

While your in the attic you will easily tell if a soffit was clogged, shop vac will gulp up crud and daylight will start to appear.
Even clearing the non vented soffit bays will make a difference in airflow, construction of soffit bays is less than air tight so cleaning them makes a difference also.

Perfect time of year for it also, not to cold but cold enough that things like wasps and other attic visitors will be sleeping.
