It runs!

Ok, I put all this great advice together, and I put some liquid wrench down the plug hole, moved the crank until the intake valve was open, put a lot more liquid wrench in there and let it sit for a while. Then I put some sae30 oil down the hole and started turning it over by hand and it was coming loose. I let it sit overnight again put it all back together and it fired up. Smoked like heck spitting junk all over the garage floor. I ran it for 5 minutes, split a couple pieces of wood, changed the oil and split for an hour. Gonna change oil again and see what it looks like coming out. The 1st time I changed it, the oil was full of metallic shavings, just like when I broke in a new gsxr 600 motor years ago, looks like metallic paint.

Going to try to attach a pic of my boys who help me move and stack the firewood. Good little buckaroos!

2 more thoughts on the splitter, 1. I wish it had a cradle, and 2. I wish the exhaust was pointed further away from me.....other than that, I think it does a good job for a $300.00 splitter. Yes, I picked it up for 300 a year and a half ago :msp_thumbup: In the pic is an old dead elm we just split, and its going straight to the wood room.

A new engine will have to wait for now.........Thanks to all !!!!!!

When the B&S engine on my splitter finally quits (going on 14yrs now) it will be replaced with a diesel. Both our vehicles are diesel and I hate having a mixed fleet

looks like a nice splitter for $300!!! Around here all I can find are beat up 22 ton huskys for $900, I can buy one new for that price on sale.

try a magnetic drain plug-be surprised whats floating in there and you don't need scored cylinder

Surf the craigslist for a $50 or $75 snowblower with a 5-7 hp engine that still runs.

Yep! Depending upon the style (horizontal vs vertical) lots of lawnmowers on craigslist for cheap as well. Got a spare for my huske splitter. It's a Kawasaki engine on a mower for a whopping 20 bucks. KD

well, I was digging around in the shed, started the snow blower up to get ready for winter, and realized I had another snowblower that wasnt it great shape but the motor runs perfect, a tecumseh 5hp horizontal shaft......... hmmmmmmmmm wonder if that would work as a replacement for the briggs? Not that I need it right now though, I changed oil one more time and the briggs is running great! and that snowblower was free!

Slick50

Throwing this out there...would it help him to take the plug out and pour some Marvel Mystery or ATF down the spark plug hole and let it sit a couple days before trying to wrench it? (Put the plug back in to cap it, remove before wrenching!)

I'm no mechanic, but I know they do such stuff on antique tractors quite often when they're trying to get a tractor going that's stuck from sitting around.

I'm a firm believer of slick50, in goes in regardless of what it is. It could save a situation such as this. Forumulated to prevent freeze-ups just like this. So, when rebuilding and or replacing the oil, just add a few ounces of this good stuff to the crank case. And, yes I would use Marv's MO for just this thing. Peace

+1 on the Habor Freight Predator 6.5 engine on sale right now for $99. Pretty hard to beat.

Yup, same here. I dont have a thing against the Chinese Honda clones but when the BS gets hard to start or eats itself up on my Husky splitter I have a brand new 6HP Yanmar diesel to replace it.

Which Yannie ya got? I lean toward the 2TNV70 series, 13.5 HP or so. You can throttle them back and they'll last forever. Good little 2 cyl diesel. Quite a bit pricier than the Predator though.

splittter replacement motor

I have a wood splitter that is 30+ years old and had been looking for a B&S replacement on Craigslist for a while. A new B&S here
are $225+. The motor still ran on the splitter, but used oil and was hard to start. I didn't need one immediatley, so I would search on Craigslist for "garden tiller" often. Most older, and some newer front tine tillers use the B&S 5hp horzontal out put shaft on that style of tillers. I finally found one that was on a tiller as a replacement motor and nearly new, with 2 hours of run time on it for $100. I found many in the price range I was interested in, ($35-$75) but always was 75 to 100+ miles from me. With that style of tiller seems not many hours are put on them. It bolted on perfectly, has a bunch of compression and runs great, and.... uses no oil. I had looked at the Harbor Freight models also, and heard good things about them. Just wanted to stay USA I guess with parts for the B&S just down the road from me. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have an NOS L70 electric start. I also have a 3.5HP L40 neat little engine.
