Got a email from a friend that knows I like chainsaws..He tells me his neighbor has a 031 for sale for $25..Then asks if I want it..Of coarse I do right...So he goes back to get it and the yard sale was done for the day..So he goes back the next morning and sends me these pic's...

Then tells me it was $30, Ok I am still happy.. My father in law has been logging his entire life and the 031 was one of his favorites so I ran it by him.By the time I got it home it was late so I gave it some fresh mix and pulled till I got tired..No spark:censored: O well.. I have most of it apart this morning. I can see marks on the piston and can't get two screws out of the gas tank flywheel cover to see if it is points or not..

I am not upset I have been looking for a saw to rebuild for some time now. No the 031 was not on the list but it will do....

What I need to know is....

What is the best off the shelf degreaser???

Where to get a gasket set? Is there a go to guy for 31 parts??

What parts will interchange with 030,031,032?? If any..

It is missing the button to lock the trigger the rest of the trigger and handle are ok anyone have just the button for sale?? Will one fit off a different model???

Any good tricks to get out the two slotted screws that are stuck would be great..I can't get visegrips on them..The hammer and chisel did not work either. So they are soaking in PB Blaster now...

Well thanks for all the help I hope to get...

wd40 helps with all that :censored:...... post a list of needed parts here and contact Volks-man he just bought a few 031 parts saws

Cool thanks for the info....

The blaster did the trick..

Now I need to pull the flywheel and the jug.....

Are the jug screws slotted or hex??? There is so much crap on it I cant tell yet.....

Will engine degreaser harm anything??

Thanks again............

The trigger lock button should be fairly standard from all those older saws - 03x, 04x, 05x series. Heck, I salvaged one off a busted 031 handle section I found at the dump and it fit my 090 perfectly.

I also have most of an 031 sitting in a box downstairs, so I have a few extra parts too if you need 'em. Looks like you have everything there though, so it probably just needs the points polished and set and the fuel system overhauled. Nothing too major or expensive there. Unless yours is electronic and/or the coil is crapped out; then things could get a bit tricky. Personally I wouldn't bother buying a base gasket. I'm running my 031AV gasketless right now and it STILL has about .027 squish gap. And, you can make your own if necessary from a 12-pack box, cereal box, heavy paper, you name it. It's nothing special. Just spray-glue a piece to the bottom of the cylinder, and cut away all the excess.

I can understand why your FIL feels the way he does about these saws. They're not the lightest things, but mine can still keep up to my more modern ~50-cc saws. Lots of grunt there. And I've always loved the look of the old horizontal-design Stihls.

Thanks for the info one the trigger lock button.. My fil has a smashed 041 I have been after for years I think I can score one off of it....

I'm going to pull the flywheel today and see whats back there...
I am hoping for points that just need cleaning...

Nice videos of the 031.......

Ok so I got the flywheel and the jug off today....The cylinder looks nice a little shinny but no marks. The piston has some marks but the rings looked fine. I was surprised because the compression test read 115 and leaked down fast....Now as for the points one was shinny and one is a little burnt...

I will take some pic's soon..

Wish I felt better to respond. Id get a set of rings for the compression problem. But first I would figure out the spark problem. I say condenser.Last time i said that I was wrong. Search 031 spark,031 points,031 ignition. You should find good advise

Now for some pic's....

I took 20 shots and these are the best...

I do think rings will fix up the compression but I will have to look to find the spark problem....

For cleaning the "crud" I usually get a couple cans of the cheap walmart carb cleaner and an air hose. Does a pretty good and quick job.

Anybody have a carb for an 031? I need one for one I'm working on.

I have 2 031AVs with Episan pistons from the greek guy on ebay. That piston is not something I would reuse......but I am picky.

I wonder if it blew a crank seal with all that scoring on the side of the piston??????????????????

The cylinder is smooth and there are no marks on the rings witch is leading me to believe it is old and it had been redone some time in the past....
