We spent the weekend at the Webster County Woodchopping Festival in Webster Springs, West Virginia. Webster is one of the premier Lumberjack shows in the east. The hotsaw class is interesting because they only allow production based saws, no motorcycle or snowmobile engines. There must have been 30 or 40 hotsaws there, over half were 3120's. Most of the big names in the east were there, Mel Lentz, Harry Burnsworth, Paul Phenninger, Gaston Dupree, Jerry Gingras, Gary Hammond, along with some talented locals that aren't too well known outside of West Virginia.

Jerry Gingras set a new world record for 12" Yellow poplar, 3 cuts, cold start, of 4.27 seconds. Unbelievable cut. He was using an 088. The old record was held by Gaston Dupree, at around 4.4, also with an 088. Five of the twelve finalists were under 5 seconds. The also added an under 5 cu. in. stock appearing class, which was fun to watch.

The hand sawing and chopping was great too. The world record in Jack and Jill was broken twice in the finals. In the chopping, Jason Wynyard cut a 12" white pine standing in 13 hits, at 14 seconds.

In the master's underhand, Dave Geer cut a 12" white pine in about 45 seconds. He is 78 years old.
