Tulip poplar is a horse of a completely different color. I wish we had some of them up here. Nice straight logs with no branches for a long ways up. Makes good lumber.
I started to say the same thing. Location makes a difference. What some folks call Poplar or Pople is Aspen. On the East Coast if we say Poplar we usually mean Tulip or Yellow Poplar, Joe.
 
tulip popler is easy to split, handle and makes great warm season wood. I either split it really small for starting the coals or I split about 6-8" pieces fro overnight warm season burning. Actually does well in my stove.
 
Hmm... Sycamore comes in at about the sane as elm and even better than black ash in BTU/lb. Better than soft or red maple, I am surprised that you trashed sycamore. Just MHO. :confused:

Oh, I hate sycamore! Low BTU's, splits hard, and leaves a TON of ash. It's a messy tree, too. Glad mine died.
