My cousing lives in toronto and asked me to recommend a tree for her to plant in her yard...not a large lot but not tiny...she wants something tall-ish... as i live in bc i'm sure her idea of tall is my idea of short... i guess it should be fairly hardy...she doesn't want too dense of foilage to block sun and (in her words) hoped it could be 'lacy'!?
thanx

Larix kaempferii. Japanese larch. The native L decidua tends to be a bit larger and denser but also a fine tree. I miss its fall color. :(

"Sunburst" Honey locust(Gleditsia triacanthos inermis "sunburst") could qualify as "lacy and not too tall" Red maple(Acer rubrum "red sunset" or "october glory") is a nice tree for smaller yards, just watch the cultivars. River birch (Betula its getting late) is a nice pick also, "Crimson frost" has a nice red, burgandy leaf. Maybe a help, maybe not.
