ring gap vs cylinder life

will measuring ring end gap give a good indication of how much life is left in a otherwise good looking cylinder? (example) if I use a new set of rings in an old cylinder will the ring gap indicate how worn the cylinder is? Im looking for a way to decide on when its time ( along with using a compression gauge) to re-cylinder a saw. Thanks Lee

If the cylinder is nikasil/chrome lined by the time any significant wear that effect clearance happens, you are through the coating.

If it's smooth with no gouges, chips, etc. re-ring or new/piston ring.
