Yes if the oil you are using does not have rust inhibitors it will rust internally in time even from humidity

Yes but it is very rare. I have found some with rust seized pistons and they were very old and sat a very long time in a shed. The moisture in the shed must have found it's way into the cyl. The oil from the gasmix keeps the cyl from rusting and I have restored 30 year old engines that sat for a long time it all depends. If it is rusted in the cyl it is not easy to repair but is possible.
 
i sold a saw and the guy said it had rust inside the saw like it hadn't been ranin years. i only ran stihl 50:1 mix in the saw. i used it about 2 weeks ago then i sold it. usually used it 2 to 3 times a week. he said it needs to be taken apart .
 
also said it had no oil in the cylinder and he dumped oil in the spark plug hole and it ran out the bottem gasket.
