Cabling/bracing well above the fork works well. Above the fork is better, because the cable has more leverage to hold the tree together. If you go too high, the branch is not strong enough to hold the tree together under a strong load.
A split will often heal very well. given enough years to close the gap and begin to form new layers of healthy tissue binding the tree together. It may be possible someday to say that the tree is healed.
If you are lucky, and do everything right.
1. pull trunks together.
2. drill holes for brace rods.
3. Install brace rods.
