Thats what I thought. Like in the NW. Isnt all they have up there is pine? Like fir trees and stuff?

Some hardwood (by definition) such as aspen, cottonwood, willow. As long as it is wood, it will burn, it will provide heat and it will heat your house. All species contain approximately the same amount of BTU pound for pount, e.g., a pound of balsa and a pound of oak are about the same BTUs.

Out here one does not have the option of being a wood snob.
 
We have alot of cottonwood here....is it good after its dry?

It's down near bottom on firewood charts. I have only done one since 1976 - swore I'd never do another. I could not split it even with a hydraulic splitter, Like trying to split a wet sponge. Even after I let 16" rounds dry fro a year I still had to cut them in half before the splitter would go though them...even then it was more 'mash' through them.
