Secondary burn time? how long?

hello,

I have a Jotul Firelight and can achieve a secondary burn for only 3- 4 hours before the fire dies down a bit and I loose the seconday. Will still burn for 4-5hours but no secondary as the wood is mostly reduced to hot coals. Is this normal?
