Split 'em or burn 'em?

I've been looking for an answer to this question too, and all very interesting answers. I noticed that no one says splitting based on how the wood dries out. I burn hackberry--this year I left some bigger pieces till fall (cut March '09), and they seemed "punky" throughout the middle. Wouldn't you want to split most of it so it will dry faster? Would that make for better wood at burn time?

I split anything bigger than 12" dia once. The OWB don't care, but I have in the last few years! LOL!
