Have a question about Stihl case gaskets.

Were different materials used over the years?

I purchased the two black gaskets shown on the left on ebay. They were marked as OEM.

The single gasket picture is what the item was listed as being.

Are the gaskets I purchased OEM and just made from different material, or would they be aftermarket?

Samples of OEM Stihl crankcase gaskets/colors used through the years. All are OEM and in their original Stihl packaging.

As you will notice, there are slightly different shades of black; even though the "black ones" are all black and OEM. The camera flash, background color, and distance from the camera lens will also affect the color appearance. Many - but not all - gaskets were made with printing on one side and not the other. During the decades that this gasket was (and still is) sold by Stihl, they certainly used different gasket vendors and different materials (whether due to durability or profit margins). You'll also find that packaging (and labels) varied by date, distributor and region/zone.

A prime example; looking at the cylinder base gasket in your kit; it's olive green in color w/the supplier printing on it. That 1118 029 2306 gasket was also sold in black/gray, two-tone green and white, and olive green. All colors were sold by Stihl and all were/are OEM.

Lastly, here are two pics of an 1121 007 1050 gasket/seal kit. As you'll clearly see, this is an OEM Stihl kit, however, the gasket colors are lime green; far different than the color in your kit. Does that mean that your kit is fake, or this one is? Of course not. It simply means that Stihl used different colors and shades of gaskets. This is the same lime green, by the way, that is shown in my previous photo (on the right/bottom right side).

Point being, you can't assume a gasket is or is not OEM by the color shade.

I appreciate the input.

The only reason I care is that I'm told oem gaskets seal without sealant, almost everytime.

Perhaps you should put the correct picture in your eBay add. You show a different gasket. Your username is next to the green gasket and should be next to what you sold me.

I've also never seen a choppy cut on an oem gasket either.

I guess the buyer should beware. I got something that looked totally different than what was advertised.

Interesting
Extremely.

Also lacking common sense.

Post a pic of modern day looking OEM gaskets but send something that looks totally different. Perhaps one might want to provide an explanation in the description that the gasket is a different version of OEM so that the prospective buyer can make an informed decision.

The model number next to the part means nothing to me here. Hell, we've all seen AM jugs that have a Stihl PN cast right into the base.

Then the seller gets angry when it's questioned. Insinuates an steadfast accusation of wrongdoing buy the buyer instead of an explanation.

The bottom line is that the item purchased looks nothing like what's Advertised. If I build a saw with it and it fails, I become "it" and have to offer an explanation.

Total Horseshìt.

Every single part that I have ever purchased from Stihl since the 80's came in packaging that had Stihls name all over it, and a genuine Stihl part number on the packaging as well as the Stihl part number on most of the items themselves ....

The gaskets that you received are pure AM !!

Those gaskets are Aftermarket, not that I mind aftermarket gaskets, but Al clearly paid for OEM and these are NOT what he paid for, the seller needs to refund the money and change his post, or he could find himself in trouble with Ebay, and most of his potential buyers are on these sites!
