I've worked on mostly older, smaller saws and found this flange bolted on the crankcase.

What about on my muff modded, Max flow'd, ports cleaned up 461? It's already shifting more air and running cooler than the EPA choked stocker. I know it also acts as a crank stuffer but I'm inclined to remove it and see how it goes. After cylinder alterations they removed them from the later 462s.That flange is for giving the piston pin with needle bearing some lubrication. It optimizes the flow of the fuel air mixture in the engine to help lubricate and cool it. Do not remove it.
