I'm 6'4" and only use the vertical mode on my Speeco splitter....sit on a round and split away....no more back pain. b ob
However, Bob, if you work my yourself, the vertical mode takes much longer to split the same quantity of firewood. Without someone to feed you the logs, you have to get up, sit back down and split, get up, sit back down and split, etc.

With the splitter in the horizontal position, you can remain on your feet the whole time. And, if the logs are already on the truck or trailer at working height, you don't even have to lift them from the ground to the beam.

Custom fit splitter

Here is what I have and I am 6' 6". When my dad was converting the splitter from a 3pt hitch for a tractor to a tow-able unit, he asked me how high I wanted it. So in true redneck fashion, he used boxed tubing, channel iron, angle iron and ibeam that he had laying around to custom build it to fit me.

I like the pictures that show the home built log lifts. Gotta get one on mine.

milkie....if you can post a picture of your splitter, maybe we could give you some simple design suggestions on raising the height of it. without seeing what you have to work with it would just be all guess work.

if you can't post a picture, email it to someone here and they can do it for you.

AaaH That worked better...

What is the extra control valve/handler for? does the splitter beam lower and lift itself hydraulically?

It's for the log lift you see on the other side.

Correct

The splitter rolls in and out on the rails and can easily be raised or lowered by one person (even a 65 yr old guy with a bad back), works quite well...
This season has been the test period for it, all seems to work well, now need to get it all painted up an pretty...

When I bought my splitter 35 or so years ago the first thing I did was lift it up to 24" to the top of the beam. I then ended up raising it an other couple of times through the years and this year when I built my own I set the beam height to 34". Bending over multiple times on the same block is a young man's game.
When I finished the spitter and the folding conveyor that I had envisioned I ended up going a few steps further but that's another story.
