Well most of my timber falling is done doing residential tree care but when I fall a tree I use an 044. Where I live there are few trees I need anything bigger to fall or buck. I occasionally run into a tree where an 066 would come in real handy, especially on the stumps. I need to get one. on 880 would be overkill in my parts.

I think the most prevalent answer you'll get from the Stihl camp is 044/046/066... Husky guys will probably say the 372, or 390, or ??

My cousin John liked the 288 and 272 when he was falling.

I've got a 441 as well. I have used it with a 36" bar when I needed to but it doesn't like it. I am using a 25" bar on my 044 now. Been running the 361 with a 20" bar, 260 16" bar, 200T 14" bar.

I couldn't say for sure since I've never been there, but in the PNW it's probably:

2171
372
044
046

Most are probably running 28" bars. And I'm sure they keep some bigger saws around for the occasional monster.

I dont do it for a living but I reach for my 066 w 28" bar and 8 tooth rim. That saw dose 90% of my cutting and all but the very smallest of my felling. I havnt ever felled a tree where I would have needed the 880, and I doubt I'd even attempt such a tree at this point in my life.

Kinda depends on the tree... 044 for anything small to medium. 066 for the bigger stuff, and an 880 for the big cluster willows or cottonwoods (sometimes big enough to justify pulling out the 59" bar we've used probably a dozen times in the last 10 years) or big maple, oak, and ash buttlogs.

Of course, when I get the new 7900 I might switch that list up a bit.

..... The great PNW home of the "big saws" and "big timber"

Around here it's a 660 with a 24" bar by a pretty wide margin... every faller/logger worth a squirt is in the 90cc saws..... 064, 066, 660 for Stihl 390, 394, 395 for Husky, probably at lest half of those are modded and most all are swinging a 24" or 28" bar.

Second place would go to the 044/440/046/460's and to a lesser extent the 372/385's with a few Dolmar 7900's mixed in for good measure but they are few and far between.

location: maine
timber: white pine, red spruce, eastern hemlock, balsam fir, northern hardwoods.

anything over 12 inches on the but gets a 372 with a 20", smaller wood in thinnings and the like will get a 346 or 357.

i keep a 372 on the landing for bucking, another in the woods for felling, and a 346 on my skidding machine for limbing.

I cut mostly Eastern hard woods and pine and hemlock

Pritty much use a 660 for every thing with a 24" bar just got one ported up and it has almost made logging fun again. . . . . but I do really like the 2171's with a 20" bar for wood lots with small wood and limby pine and hemlock.
