We have been looking for another splitter to augment our Huskee 35-ton splitter and speed up our production. We've looked at Timberwolf and American CLS and really like the splitters that they make. Unfortunately, the price has kept us from purchasing a new unit.

Recently we saw the Timberwolf TW-3HD and it has gotten us excited again. It's a 3-pt unit that is powered by a PTO pump. This works out well because one of the guys has recently purchased a JD650 compact tractor. We're thinking that the Timberwolf and the JD would look great together. Additionally, the price of the TW-3HD is within our price range. So, in true AS tradition, I wanted to check with all you guys and seek your counsel before we spend any money.

....wadda ya think?

True AS tradition would be to go out and spend all that money and then ask if you made a smart purchase.:hmm3grin2orange:

Are you planning on using the tractor for anything else in the firewood operation? If so the PTO unit might be a major PITA. I'm not a big fan of PTO driven anything that can be run by a smaller more efficient engine. How many RPM's does the pump run off of? You may be burning a lot of expensive fuel. You also may be burning up valubale hours on the tractor.

Your power take off is either 1,000 or 540 rpm-most likely 540 with a reversible PTO spline to fit both PTO sizes, At 540 RPM which is typically standard nowadays and with the very efficient engines you will not have much of a work load on the JD650 as it is no where near high idle. With regard to the TW-3HD you can always trade up or sell it out right later on and buy a Chomper PTO driven processor.
