I followed the manual's instructions for thermometer placement and optimum burn temperature for my F3 and am very happy with it. Great little stove. I think you'll love that 500!

Past our 3rd winter with the Oslo 100% heating a 24 sq ft, 2 story cape wing (no plumbing to freeze) in Downeast Maine. The Oslo BTW has been on for morning fires all spring.
Putting a stove in a cellar is just heating outside dirt, your choice, unless the foundation is seriously insulated on 3 sides.
Great stove that needs plenty of air from the ash pan door, or the side load door cracked to get a fire going....be sure to keep an eye on the top corner(s) thermometers ( we have 2 ). The front door is a real PITA since the ashes get piled up against the door even when you brush them away. We never open or use the front door except for the odd times when company comes to clean the ceramic "glass".
The ideal in mid-winter temp is +/- 500F
Like all non-cat stoves the air control is limited for EPA specs: not too much air, not too little air. You'll figure out the right mix and control depending on wood species, wood moisture, and how hot you need it to be in the basement. The Oslo needs a good draft---tall chimney with no wind blocks.
Good choice.

Nope , the woman who sold it to me had just moved and could not find the manuals
But I found the link for a manual , was wondering when the secondary burn kicks in and how to best burn overnite . Thanx for the links

If I'm careful, I can get an overnight burn in my F3, even with its small firebox. To do this, I build a bed of coals during the evening and then load the stove with large splits or unsplit pieces of well-seasoned Ash or Oak, and then turn the air control all the way down before going to bed. I can come back six or seven hours later and find a bed of coals and easily get it going again. If I get up during the night, I throw another couple of pieces in, then I know I'm good.

This sometimes covers the glass with a black film, but I find that it burns off with a hot fire and a little time. If any remains when the stove is cold, some ammonia (clear, not sudsy) and a sheet of b&w newsprint clean the glass up pretty easily.

The 500's firebox must be twice the size of mine or more. You should be able to get a nice overnight burn in it without turning the air control all the way down.

Just keep the surface temp above 400F and you will have a very clean chimney. It will hold coals over night with descent hardwood. I always feed it at night. The stove is just down the hall and I get up at least once any way. If the family wakes up and the house is below 70F you would think the world had stopped…It is good to hear you got it installed.
