This one has me stumped.

Tree is growing in wet area at the edge of a gravel hill. Could have been planted as a seedling but I'm not sure so it's possibly not a native Northern MN species. Growing amongst red maple, aspen, and black ash. It's about 4" dbh and starting to die at the top.

North side of tree is smooth, south side does have some loose scales but not the typical "diamond tread" of it's ash neighbors. Nor does it have the vertical furrows that even small ash possess.

Leaves similar but much larger and darker than black ash.

Has a flyer type seed similar to ash but hasn't dropped yet. None of the ash have their seeds.

Any ideas?

Black ash on left for comparison.

Looks like the green ash I've been cutting saplings of.

I think you are correct. Thanks! Definitely must have been a planted seedling. We got several different species one year about 20 years ago and planted them all around here. I never paid attention to what took hold.
