Anyone have any guesses as to what type of tree this was? It was still standing dead, with almost all the bark long gone.

I agree...that last pic looks like some species of Populus ... maybe Cottonwood - would have been my 1st guess, but that is the most common around here.

It's very light weight, and already down to about 14-15% moisture on a fresh split. After doing a search for some split poplar, it looks like that's what it is.
