I built a couple ms170 saws from parts and the early top cover won't fit on the new saw. I have some older covers but only one new one and two newer saws. Can the old one be made to fit?

It takes more parts to be replaced than just the air filter box to fit a different ( new or old ) MS 170/180 top cover to the engine housing ( old or new ,respectively ) .
Fan housing covers are also different.

If the newer version saw ( the one which needs the updated top cover ) is a strato ( 2-mix ) then it has also different: ignition module carburetor ,cylinder, piston, connecting rod ,main bearings ,bearing seals and intake boot and won't fit the older version air filter box ,unless all of them are changed to the older version .But do not worry ,there's a very little chance for this to be happening ( no stratified MS170 or MS180 in the US )
