Most people probably think only of the green, ScotchBrite dishwashing pads. But 3M (and competitors) make a wide range of sizes, shapes, thicknesses, abrasive types, coarseness, etc., up to floor buffing pads.
Through their industrial divisions, they sell them for metal finishing, auto body paint repair, etc.
I’ve used pads cut to fit a square base finishing sander, at low speeds, with WD40 as a lubricant, after seeing the manager of a home center use that to remove rust from the cast iron surface of a table saw.
I am sure that 3M sells a range of products for this use, although, a hook&loop (‘Velcro’) backing pad should hold most in place for normal use.
