What is the purpose of the AS chainsaw forum?

I still play hockey on what's left of my knees. Over the course of a season or two, it's easy to aquire a dislike for an opponent. A little bump here, an elbow there, a little use of the stick. Some insults about manhood, "keep your head up", some time in the box. But the only real difference between you and the other guy is you're wearing different colored shirts. If you were on the same team, or having a couple of cold ones together, the "Jerk" isn't really a bad guy after all.

And so it goes with the endless brand bashing. We find ourselves arguing with guys simply because we own different brand saws. Eventually, even though someone is probably a decent guy, you develope a dislike for him. As long as guys insist on lining up behind the logo's on their hats, every thread will continue to devolve into an argument. Some guys are instigators, but most only get involved when they have to defend their turf, which is a natural reaction.

I've spent less time here on the main forum for that reason. It's just become a waste of time. For the most part, I found it best to avoid the "opinion" threads, (allthough this is one LOL), and try to pitch in on a thread where I can offer some tech info and actually help somebody solve a problem.

This is part of the reason the social groups are popular. You can have an intelligent discussion without somebody jumping in and causing a problem. I compare it to being able to eat out on the deck without insects. But how good is it for the site if we're spending time in the other groups so we can away from each other?

Doe anyone ever wonder whether the people who do the brand bashing have ever even run one of the saws that they are bashing? Saws are kinda like women to me in a way. You'd be hard to find one that has absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Probably because no manufactures have come out with a new super saw lately, now we all have argued last years "new thang" to death.

There certainly has been a decline. Not sure that more vigorous moderation would solve it, because there has been a brain drain more than anything. Fewer and fewer guys who really know their stuff, more homeowner types. Where'd the arborists go? The loggers? Heck, we don't hardly even have line clearance cutter people hanging around anymore!

If I wanted to know what homeowner-types had to say about saws, I'd log off the site and just talk into a mirror.

I don't even bother with the threads that aren't about saws, or the brand bashing.

Generally, if the thread doesn't involve a saw that I may work on, I don't bother. I'm referring to the Mall threads and the like. Yes, those have a place.

Lately I have been finding it hard to find a thread that interests me. Maybe it's because a lot of the old timers aren't posting as much, I don't know. Basically, I figure that I've been here long enough, so it's now my turn to help the newbies with the basics. I do what I can.

Oh well, life goes on.

Personally, I agree with the OP, I would like to see more useful Chainsaw posts and less bickering.

Well, the next time you are about to hit that "Submit Reply", take your time to read your post one more time...and think if it is really helpful or not. I've seen quite a few posts from you that didn't add too much value. they don't bother me, just sayin...

I try to stay out of the quarrels if I can, and have had my fair share of them on other foras, but I guess I'm getting too old to act like a little kid, *too* much, I mean I will never completely grow up...

I can say that I have had replies that I did just as I suggest above, and I decided to not send them at the last minute.

I am personally on AS to learn and meet people with similar interests. The recent GTG we held was terrific.

Not a bad reason, your GTG looks like a great time for all. In most all cases if we got everyone together we'd all have a great time, I'm sure that even spacemule is a decent guy if you could pry his silly keyboard away from him...

I would think most of the people looking for advise are homeowner types and add value to the site by adding info on how the saws are running in a non pro atmosphere.

Try not to take the place to seriously and just scan for threads that you might have interest in or might be able to help someone with. As with most of you, I belong to numerous forums. Some of them I find time for and some I don't. With thousands of members, you are going to have constant issues. If you see something you don't like, ignore it.If the site isn't what you think it should be, signing out is always an option. It's all just type written and means very little in the big picture. Start a similar forum, make it private and only invite those who you believe to be a worthy contributors. I belong to a private site like that and it weeds out the dead wood quickly. This site is a huge resource for me, at the moment I wouldn't think about leaving.

Seriously, is AS intended as an outlet for individuals with a chainsaw to ask questions about repairs and recommendations?

It seems that over the past couple of months it has turned into a public #####ing arena. Threads that provoke only animosity and intentionally try to discredit certain members have been popping up all the time. I am not talking about the friendly ball-busting or jesting posts but the 30 page threads that are entirely attacking individuals. These threads detract from the purpose of the forum and discourage members (old and potentially new) from posting.

Most of the arguments have no resolution, and go round and round. Can't we just let the subject die, and get back to more productive topics?

EDIT: There are certain members whose presence on this site is now and historically has been a zero value-added experience for the rest of us, and their rubbish should be moderated away. AOD springs to mind, though he's certainly not the only one.

Also, someone today came up to me saying they were having nothing but problems with their MS390 and no longer wanted to deal with it. He asked me to remove the bar & chain and fill the oil and fuel tanks with cement so he could use it as a boar anchor. I happily obliged.

Could the site be coming to it's senses at last? I raised this issue about 2 years ago. I got half a dozen supportive posts and PMs on the matter but all were howled down by dozens of other posts so I kept my head low for a while. Now the brand bashers don't bother me as much as they used to and I just pick out the threads that look useful. I think the reason a lot of people fall out is that they get a bit tired of the newbie type questions and posts - especially those which indicate they never bothered to search the forum.
