What is wrong-tree bark falling off

I have a large tree in my backyard. In the last week large sections of the bark have split and several pieces have fallen off exposing a 1 ft by 4 ft section of the part under the bark. Why is this happening and what should I do? Mary

Without a photo and the proper id of the tree, no one can really advise you properly...

Nah, just being a knucklhead.......but I do think it sounds like the death disease. If the cambium exposed is dry then I'd really be convinced it is dead.

I spoke to a person just yesterday, who told me his apple tree was dead, all the bark has fallen off the main trunk, but it still gets nice big apples every year. No leaves, just apples.

I've also spoken to people multiple times, who told me, last week their tree was fine, almost overnight it was dead, only to visit the tree to see a totally bark-less, decaying, mess that has been dead for several years.

You never know!
