Not sure what it is. Does not have a very distinctive smell.

In the absence of any other information, mostlikely bitternut hickory.

Would have bright yellow winter buds and brown, very bitter kernel to its nut, to assist ID.

There are a few other hickories that are similar. All burn great, with excellent fragrance. Just get it dry quickly to help fend off powder post borers.

The black Cherry the toher guys picke out from a checked up round?

I got some learnin to do.

Its most encouraging to see wood I can ID on my land, yet a days drive away, and whole different temperate climate. (or three or four)

I also vote Hickory. I thought it might be a White Ash or a Green Ash of some sort but I now think it looks closer to be Hickory.

I finally split some of it and it splits very stringy. Not as stringy as gum but it seemed more like some white ash I've split in the past.
