Use to be lots of big sasafrass around here (Ozarks) most were cut for the excelent

Not sassafrass, if it was it would be an old one. Have several in the yard and they are not that big.

light weight wood. I cut up one that got blown over two years ago that was three feet in diameter, it had grown up solitary in a pasture so it was only 70 feet tall with many large branches starting about 20 feet up. Counting by several folks came up with over 80 but under 100 rings.

The larger ones in the woods are twice that tall at 3 ft dbh.

Grandpa milled quarter sawn 16" wide by 20 feet long boards to make flat bottomed jon boats. I still make canoe paddles from sassafrass.
