I was thinking about this the other day.

When the pressure is on; the temptation to work fast is there, what do you think about to motivate yourself to stay safe?

Between my want to be able to cut for years and years (which is hard when you're missing a leg, or dead) and wanting to have children and be a good dad, I don't screw around with the saw. I always wear my chaps and I'm always careful.

I'm raising three kids on my own, so I know that my risk creates undue burden on others. I try to think and rethink before every move in a tree and before every cut on the ground. You HAVE to have your mind in the right place to be aware of your surroundings and the possible risks involved.

The ability to live everyday to it's fullest. God has blessed me with a wonderful family, good health, and an able body. I intend to keep my self in good condition for as long as I can.

A guy I know had a young and apparently proficient climber working for him. We had a real hot snap and it was the 3rd day that was going to get over 100. He was doing a dead TD and was really pushing everybody to get done befor it got scorching. He apparently didnt want to stop for lunch and tied on a huge limb. Everybody told him it was WAY TO BIG. He said "shut the F### up and make it smooth" The lead he was roping out of snapped and the jagged break struck him in the side of the face, ripped his face off, broke his neck and spun him out over the busy street where his rope got tangled around the primary lines. He was dead. Took fire dept 3 hours to get lines de-energized so they could get the corpse................

i don't cut professionally. think "weekend warrior". however, that doesn't make me any less careful...

my motivators?

That's the kind of situation where I'd say either we're not working today, or we're gonna do something that's lower risk, and requires less physical exertion. Not worth it.

I like the replies. Very close to the things I think about. For me it all started some years ago when I worked in LE. I was getting rather jaded and didn't care much, I was only safe because the one thing I hated was losing.

One day a real bad dude decided to attack me. In a brief moment I thought about a woman I loved and my family. I realized just how much they mattered to me. I ended that fight with the swiftness of an angry mother bear.

That incident made me think a lot. Mostly about what really mattered to me. The thing that struck me was that they loved me and would feel bad if anything happened to me. I would hate to put them through that, so I work as safe as possible now.

We do dangerous work. I tell my guys that a prayer for safety never hurts either.

That got me through the depression I had when I got out of the USMC. I was hurting all the time, getting used to living with my disabilities. I had take not ????e attitude, had problems keeping a job.... sometimes it seemed it would be easier to go 1% or just drive off the road. I wasn't suicidal, but the though did occur to me. The idea that that would be so selfish and unfair to my family (Mom, Dad, Bro and L'il sis. Diane and I have been together 3 years) to put them through that.

I see rushing, high risk work and "cut and pray" SOP in the same light. .

The work is higher risk then most trades as it is, if we add to it on a regular basis we will get hurt and that will hurt those we love, and depend on us being hale and whole.

Spent a couple weeks in hospital 33 years ago after getting between a tree and a dozer.

Wasn't any fun, tend to try to think ahead since then.
