white poplar

Was splitting some white poplar and noticed the rotting sections of the tree that I cut up were infested with ants once the round was split open. Is this a normal problem for poplars, and what kind of ants wood those be?

Most likely Carpenter ants - they love rotted wood and burrow into it hollowing out tunnels to make their nests.

+1. Any tree/species that's got rot in it is a good home for carpenter ants.

Once the wood is split open will they all just leave, or do I have to worry about them attacking the rest of my pile? I didn't even know we had carpenter ants where I live. Ah you learn something everyday.
