I have a 45 year old Ash Tree that has an area where an old branch broke off. I noticed a white fungal looking area near one of the main branches and now need to evaluate next steps. The tree hangs over our patio area and provides an immense amount of shade. Any initial thoughts from the photos or if anyone has had success in tree survival doing a prune versus full extraction? Does it appear the tree could be cut at that branch and salvaged?

How are you doing on the emerald ash borer where you are?

In my area that tree would be removed because fighting emerald ash borer and that apparent fungus growth at the same time on a tree that close to your house would be too much. I still have ash trees along my driveway, and I'm treating a few in the yard, but I took down all of them near my house, barn, and septic system.

Thats trouble just waiting to happen, and with power lines underneath, i had a pretty big dead ash leaner taken out a few years ago that would have caused irreparable damage. Only 300$ from a local arborist, way cheaper than the ins deductible
