Another familiar screen name & I put this together for chits & grins . A case for buying old Homies and Macs
I must admit that ECHO has made great strides towards a marketable product. Them and POULAN were running neck & neck for dubious distinction for the POS award. Maybe about 10 yrs ago. POULAN has outdistanced them to the bottom of the barrel. I must also put in a disclaimer.. This is my opinion. As with all saws, sometimes ya get one built on a Monday, and other times ya get one built on a Monday after the Superbowl. It's not a very good comparison, I have
a box store poulan I bought in around '06, didn't last two whole fire wood seasons. For $180 on a new Stihl 170 it'll last for years. That being said a $40 xl12 or Mac 10-10 that runs is a great choice. I think the comparison should be against mid range Husky, Echo, Stihl home owners models. The poulan is an absolute piece of crap, and does not make a good heat saw
I looked at a new Echo midsized saw fifty CC's, I didn't run it, actually looks very comparable to brand name stuff. Echo used to make a good saw. Poulan on the other hand never made a good saw. (my opinion of course) I knew guys that cut a lot of cedar liked them because they were lighter and would wind quick. And cedar didn't work them as hard so it didn't get into durability issues with the Poulan, but for me that's no excuse for cramming a sub-par product down the consumers throat, especially when they're using it to make a living.I must admit that ECHO has made great strides towards a marketable product. C. W. I agree with most of your statements, and I don't disagree with any of it. If that makes sense. I recently picked up an ECHO 1001, circa 1976, 100 cc's of quality metal.. Almost all my saw are pre 1990. 2 of my daily drivers are a Homes 1050, and Mac 55.. My limber is Stihl 017. She's 2nd hand but just like new. Newest I've owned. My first saw was (and still is) a 1960 Mac 1-70. I'm not saying I'm an expert, fact is far from it, cuz I don't have the experience, but my list of saws that I own, plus the saws I've fixed and sold must be over a hundred. I love to read and learn and by doing so I notice the progression of saws over time. Can't help it. Point is, all companys make decisions that work,or don't work and all hinging on the bottom line. Money!! Harley Davidson being a good example of Riches to rags to riches. As I look at innovations on design, I try to figure out what must have been going through their mind. And the all important WHY! I could go on and on, but I won't.. My wife says I just love to hear myself talk, and this I suppose ain't much different.. I've vented, and hoping I haven't stepped on any toes. I still love working on my saws. Wish I had known this fact 40 yrs ago, because I wouldn't have worked a day.. Thanks for listening. So true.. Wife says I should sleep with Mike Acres I spend so much time with him. I believe his place is just about straight North & maybe a little West of me across the border in Canada. I've always said anybody knows about Chainsaws is a Canuck, and anybody knows about Chainsaws & beer are Wisconsins. Unfortunately I live in Washington and we on East side of the state know pine needles. Hmmm. Still burns though.. Daylight saving time.. Lost an hour, must get going. Cheers, K7-21C 59 to 60 82cc
