With the crankcase serial number, can I lookup the original model number?

With the crankcase serial number, can I lookup the original model number?
How? (Hope I don't have to deal with the dealers.)

Only stihl can (email them), or maybe a dealer if after 1992 or so (if it was registered).

I guess that is the best way to ID a saw, especially when the name plate is gone or someone changed out any parts. Thank you, Master Lake.
