Found this down tree near me. Any idea what it is?

My first guess is basswood. But tulip-poplar is certainly a possibility.

Hope it is basswood. Looks like slightly better firewood than poplar. It's easy to get so I'll do something with it!

what do you mean by "poplar"? Sometimes that is Populus (cottonwood, aspen, etc...) - bad firewood...but still gets used especially up north where there aren't a lot of options. Sometimes "poplar" is Liriodendron (tulip-poplar) - not great firewood.

I've never heard somebody making firewood say "I hope its basswood"

Looked at heat values of basswood vs. poplar........basswood looks better. Wish it was something better but its an easy scrounge so reckon I'll take it. Got most of it hauled home, I'll get it split and stacked. Guess it can be shoulder season wood if nothing else. Or I'll donate it to someone who's wood desperate.

I've had my share of tulip poplar through the years. I'll share pics when I start splitting it. Just wish it was a bit higher value wood.

You'll know when it dries out. It'll be real light weight.
Still makes good mix-in wood and good kindling.

I finally split a couple pieces......looks like it's indeed poplar. Oh well, it'll make some heat and was easy enough to get.
