Got some free firewood from a blowdown in an old cemetery here in SE PA. No idea what it is. I am familiar with most common trees in our area. Wood did not give me the feeling it would make the best firewood.
I also looked thru a Tree Field Guide twice to no avail.
Tree was 3-4ft in diameter, grey smooth bark, about 3/16 in. thick on the 1 ft. dia. pieces. Bark would peel easily and reminded me of Tulip Poplar bark. Tree was kinda gnarly, not tall and straight.
Heartwood was a beautiful gold/orange color (is not Tree of Heaven) and I would say the defining characteristic. Outer wood is white. Split easily and the large, black ants seemed to love it.
I believe the leaves were compound, dark green and one of the workers there said the tree gets flowers on it.
Well, thats all I got. What thinks ye?
