There can be quite a bit of color variation even withing a single tree from bright white to dark brown.

As was stated, there are lots of different species within the genus.

However, wood behavior can also be influenced by how the tree died, how long it has been dead, what fungi colonized it while it was alive, etc... so it could be the same species behaving differently or it could have been a different species...

Bark looks like green ash. You can see an emerald ash borer exit hole toward the bottom of the piece with the bark on.
