First off amazing site with a wealth of knowledge you all have here at AS. Thank you all in advance for the help given. I purchased a MS310 with what was said to be a seized piston for little. All I needed were the plastics as I had a MS290 with a broken handle. Well got the 310 home and found out that it was not infact seized just scorn. After searching on here I decided to try the Muriatic Acid treatment which I did last nite and think it went well. The cylinder is smooth to the touch but you can still see where it was scored. I just have one question would you run it! I know you guys like Pictures so before and afters of the cylinder and only befores of the piston as I will purchase a new one if the cylinder passes the AS test! If the cylinder doesn't then I guess I will have to spring for the Baileys MS390 and off course all the rubber and seals.

Looks to me like the cylinder could use a little more clean up, especially in the last two photos. It doesn't look any worse than the last one I cleaned up, the remaining black marks still look like surface aluminum that can be removed with acid. I had a few stubborn spots around the exhaust port like that that took repeated applications to finally come off.
 
Worked on the cylinder a little more this morning. Decided to try heating this time, seems to have worked alot better than a cold cylinder. I think I have to hit the cylinder one more time on the top side of the exhaust then order my piston and other parts.

Anyone have any problems with the VEC pistons from northwood?

Warming up the cylinder does make a big difference. Looks good now, get a new piston kit and go for it. I haven't used a VEC piston so I can't comment on that. Most guys here seem to recommend Meteor or Episan as the preferred choice (next to Stihl OEM). Last one I used from Northwood had no brand on the box or anything but was the only one I could find for that particular saw - I called them (nice guys BTW) and they told me it was a Mako brand. It's worked out just fine so far, although I used the original wrist pin and bearing because they seemed to fit better.
 
I would buy the meteor, it comes with caber rings and they are usually very usable. I put a vec in my 032, it took a lot of clean up to get it where I liked it, but it worked fine.
 
I would LOVE to buy a Meteor piston for this saw but Northwoods only have the VEC for the MS310.

Now that does bring up a different question.

Will the Meteor piston from Northwoods for the 08/TS350 or MS361 work in the MS310? Has anyone tried this?

Sorry if someone has I havent tried the search function yet.

Are you saying that a Stihl 08 Model of saw or is this the year 08/TS350? Then you say that they list this piston to interchange with a MS361?

That did not answer the question I asked.

The answer is that the 08 chainsaw and TS 350 & TS 360 cut off saws use the same piston and cylinder, 47mm

08s, TS350s and TS 360s all share 49 mm set-up. As to the other compatibilities, I don't have a clue.

They are 47mm bore not 49mm.

I did go and check there myself. It appears that a MS361 uses the same bore size 47mm but I it has a different wrist pin height or piston dome height off of the upper ring land. I will find out what is different soon on a tear down of saws. Wish there was a criss-cross reference guide like Hollander has for truck and autos. :curse::curse:
