What is this tool?

I know it's a shear of some kind, but does anyone know what for? Sheet metal, maybe?

Asbestos shingles used for siding.

I have seen something similar used to shear metal siding/roofing. The five ridges on the base look like they would line up with the 5 rib exposed fastener panels.

I know the siding manufacturers recommend shearing when panels need field cut instead of using abrasive blades. That way you don't burn the coating off the edge and you don't end up with little rusty specs burned into the coating months down the road.

I learned this the hard way.

back in the old days when asbestos wasn't bad for you and shingle look siding was all the rage , I sheared hundreds of squares of asbestos siding with one of those .

Hmm. It's up on a local auction. I'm thinking of bidding on it - it might also work well for vinyl siding and laminate flooring. I'll have to take a closer look at it- maybe bring some samples to cut.
